Q. What are the differences between a Medical Abortion (the Abortion Pill) and a Surgical Abortion?
A. If you decide to end a pregnancy, it is important to understand what abortion option is best for you. We offer two methods of pregnancy termination; a Surgical Abortion performed at Michigan Avenue Center for Health or the Abortion Pill, also known as the Medical Abortion. Medical Abortion is FDA approved up to 10 weeks of pregnancy and is only meant for early pregnancy termination. Surgical Abortion services are available from 5 weeks to 17.3 weeks (17 weeks 3 days) gestation. Gestation is anyways determined at Michigan Avenue Center for Health with an ultrasound.
Q. How does the Abortion Pill work?
A. A Medical Abortion uses two medications to complete a pregnancy termination. Mifepristone used together with another medicine called Misoprostol usually successfully ends a pregnancy. Patients must be willing to have a Surgical Abortion if the non-surgical does not terminate the pregnancy. Two visits to Michigan Avenue Center for Health are needed to safely administer and follow-up a Medical Abortion.
Q. Am I awake during my Surgical Abortion procedure?
A. Surgical Abortion patients undergo twilight anesthesia. There is always a recovery period after the surgery in order to assure that the patient is fully awake and comfortable.
Q. How can I avoid not having another abortion in the future?
A. Michigan Avenue Center for Health offers a wide variety of birth control options including oral contraceptives, Depo Provera injections, Vaginal Ring, Intrauterine Device (IUD), diaphragm, cervical cap, and condoms. Our affiliated Illinois Abortion facilities offer Tubal Sterilization, or Tubal Ligation, as a form of permanent female birth control if pregnancy is never wanted at any point in the future.
